LILAS is the artistic identity of Laurence van der Sande, Amsterdam-based artist and co-founder of VAN DER SANDE. The name brings together the initials of Lidewij and Laurence, reflecting the personal world from which the work originates.
Her abstract paintings explore colour, movement and chance through an intuitive process of pouring, splashing and layering paint directly onto the canvas. Rather than beginning with a fixed composition, each work evolves through the physical act of painting. Allowing gesture, gravity and spontaneity to shape the final image.
