Created in response to a solar eclipse, Briefly, the Sky Changed reflects on a fleeting moment when familiar light suddenly felt different. Against a luminous silver ground, vivid forms in crimson, magenta, pink and yellow appear suspended, creating an unexpected interplay of colour, space and movement.
Rather than depicting the eclipse itself, the work responds to its atmosphere — the temporary shift in light and perception, and the strangeness of seeing something familiar momentarily transformed.
The metallic surface plays an active role in the composition, changing subtly with its surroundings. As daylight moves across the work, the silver ground shifts between brightness and shadow, allowing the painting itself to appear slightly different throughout the day.
About the artist
LILAS is the artistic identity of Laurence van der Sande, artist and co-founder of VAN DER SANDE. The name brings together the initials of Lidewij, Laurence and Sytze, reflecting the personal world from which the work originates.
Her abstract works explore colour, movement and intuition, allowing each composition to develop through the process of making rather than from a predetermined image.
